St. Pat's Day Parade and Cullerton reunion

John Cullerton has dedicated his life to public service and to making positive changes in the life of all Illinoisans. From his years in the Public Defender's Office representing those who could not afford legal counsel, to having more legislation signed into law than any other member of the General Assembly two years running, John is committed to serving our community.

First elected to the House in 1978 and then moved to the Senate in 1992, John has emerged as a leader in the Illinois General Assembly. He is turned to by Democrats and Republicans alike to pass critical legislation. In recognition of his contribution to the Senate, President Jones invited John to served on the democratic leadership team in the Senate, as Majority Caucus Whip. In addition, John sits on the Senate's powerful Committee on Rules and Executive Committee as well as co-chairing the Judiciary Committee.

John's focus in the General Assembly is to improve our quality of life. He is a champion of gun control and traffic safety issues. This year he passed legislation to close the gun show loophole and his efforts on traffic safety have brought Illinois highway fatalities to the lowest level since 1924.
In addition, he is a leading advocate for women and protecting our environment. During this session, he co-sponsored legislation to make insurance companies cover mammograms for at risk women and legislation to reduce vehicle emissions by fueling the state's fleet with biodiesel.

His contributions have been recognized all over the country and in Illinois by groups such as the National Transportation and Safety Board, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, Independent Voters of Illinois (IVI-IPO) and many more. He also volunteers his time to serve seniors as a member of the Board of Directors at the Center for Disability and Elder Law, an organization that provides legal services for persons over 60 or with disabilities.
